Canoe & Kayak Guide
Sit On Top Kayaks
A sit on top kayak is ideal for beginners, families and children. These boats are great for having a bit of fun on rivers and the sea as they are very stable and easy to paddle. There is no worry about being trapped in the boat as it is not enclosed. There are storage hatches in the hull of the boat and in the back. Sit on tops come as solo, tandem and three person boats, giving families the opportunity to go out together. There are angling versions of sit on top boats which are modified specifically for fishing equipment.
Inflatable Canoes & Kayaks
Inflatable kayaks are the perfect solution for those with storage and transportation issues. Inflatable kayaks deflate and fold down to an easily manageable size, fitting into even the smallest of car boots and tucking away when not needed. There are various different size models available to carry 1, 2 or 3 people. They are very stable but are best suited to sheltered inland waterway such as rivers, canals and lakes. Available in a variety of different specification to suit all needs and budgets.
Touring Kayaks are ideal for calm coastal paddling, rivers, canals and lakes, they have plenty of storage for equipment. Some models have two storage hatches to provide enough storage space for overnight camping trips. Touring Kayaks are reasonably fast and efficient through the water and easier to manoeuvre than the longer sea kayaks, they often come with a drop down rudder to improve tracking. Touring kayaks are available as both single and tandem boats from a range of manufacturers.
Sea kayaks are designed to be very fast through the water, tracking well and cutting through waves for a smooth journey. They have a lot of storage in the hull of the boat and are ideal for long, overnight trips around the coast. They are available as single and tandem boats and can also be fitted with fishing accessories such as rod holders and fish finders.
Kayak paddles have a blade on each end. Sea kayak paddles are long with a thin blade designed to give you power through the water over a long period of time. White water paddles are much shorter as they are designed to give the paddler a lot of power to get through the rapids and drops. The shaft is made out of alloy or fibreglass while the blades are plastic.
Canoe paddles have one blade and a t-grip handle. The blade shape is differently depending upon if you are paddling deep water, shallow water or even advanced white water. These paddles are available in a number of different materials from aluminium, plastic, wood and glass/carbon fibre.

Like any hobby or sport having the right tools for the job can make the di”erence between spending an hour doing it or spending all day.
Some key accessories we recommend all paddlers should have include:
Kayak seats: whether it’s a high seat or low seat, having the right seat for your kayak will make the experience that much better. No matter what, having a padded seat is essential to avoid the much dreaded ‘kayak butt’. Our leisure kayaks come with low seats as standard but you can choose to upgrade these to our larger tracker seat with additional padding.
Storage Options: whether its one of our storage pods or a dry bag, having some kind of dry storage compartment is always useful.
Lifeline: having a lifeline on your kayak is useful for some added safety. It allows you to hold onto the kayak in case you fall out and is useful for other things such as anchor positioning. All our new kayaks come with HV series lifelines that are designed in various colours to add brightness and visibility when needed.
Kayak Storage: having storage on your kayak is can be an looking to do. If you plan on spending long essential demand depending on what type of use you are
Life Jacket PFD: a life jacket is an essential piece of equipment that everyone should use each time they head out kayaking.
Paddle leash: having a paddle leash is extremely useful and a good idea to keep your paddle close at all times.
Kayak trolley: having a trolley for transporting your kayak is extremely useful. Especially if you launch your kayak o” of sandy beaches then having a trolley with beach wheels will come in handy.
Paddles: all of our kayaks come with a seat and paddle as standard. However, many customers like to upgrade their paddles after having gained experience paddling. The range of paddles on o”er is extensive from carbon #bre to three piece paddles.
Rod holders: do exactly what they say. It’s an essential piece of kit for kayak anglers and there’s a large range of di”erent styles available. All our #shing kayaks come with rod holders as standard. We also design our kayaks to be able to attach a large range of Railblaza products, including their range of rod holders.
Rudder and pedal system: on long kayaks a rudder is an incredibly important piece of kit. It helps maneuver your kayak and when paddling in windy conditions it helps keep your kayak straight. The rudder is controlled by the foot pedals in your cockpit.
Fish Finder: using a #sh #nder will help you have an edge when kayak #shing. It essentially allows you to see underwater and is helpful in #nding great #shing spots. Many anglers use it to #nd structure which helps them target speci#c species – for example when bass #shing or target groupers. There’s a large range of #sh #nders available and to suit any #sherman’s needs.
Spray skirt or spray deck: a spray skirt is an essential piece of kit for sea kayaking. It is a waterproof cover with a hole designed for the passengers waist. They are used to prevent water from entering the cockpit of your boat.
How do i look after my new Canoe & Kayak equipment?
Once you have bought your new Canoe & Kayak equipment, the guidelines below will help you maintain and extened the life of your gear.
- Store your Canoe & Kayak equipment out of the sun, in a dry and shaded area.
- Transport your Canoe & Kayak and paddle in a protective bag to prevent damage.
- Be careful putting the board in the water and taking it out. There may be rocks or other sharp objects when putting your board down.
- Be careful when you are paddling and avoid any obstructions that can damage your board, paddle, or fin.
- If you have a vent plug, close it when you go out on the water. This will stop water getting into your solid Canoe & Kayak board and damaging the foam core.
- If you have a vent plug, open it when you are storing your solid Canoe & Kayak board. This will stop pressure building up inside and prevent your board from blowing up.
- Wash your Canoe & Kayak equipment after going in saltwater, be sure to get the fin boxes, slider nut and screw, as well as the deck pad.
- Regularly check for dings and cracks on your board and paddle.
- Be especially aware of your board’s nose and rails. Those are the two most common areas that get damaged.
- If you find anything that has the potential to let water into your Canoe & Kayak board, get it taken care of immediately. We offer products like ding tape that provide a temporary patch if it is not serious damage or if you are not able to repair it right away.
